Standards & claims
Compostable standards in Canada and the USA
"Biodegradable" and "compostable" are different claims. These are the standards buyers in BC and Washington ask about most.
- ASTM D6400US standard for plastics designed to compost in municipal or industrial facilities.
- ASTM D6868US standard for compostable plastic coatings on paper and other materials.
- BPI certificationThird-party certification widely recognised in North America, based on ASTM standards.
- CAN/BNQ 0017-088Canada's national standard for compostable plastics.
Ask us which standards a specific product meets and which test reports or certificates are available. Labelling rules differ between BC, Washington and other markets, so check the rules where you sell.
